SYLVIA A. EARLE
Executive Director
Defying Ocean’s End Office
Dr. Sylvia A. Earle, legendary ocean explorer and President of Deep Search International, is a marine biologist, author, lecturer and scientific consultant. She is also a National Geographic Society Explorer-in-Residence, director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Sustainable Seas Expeditions, chairman of the advisory board for Harte Institute of Marine Research at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, founder and chairman of Deep Ocean Exploration and Research, Inc. and former chief scientist of NOAA.
Her research concerns the ecology of marine ecosystems with special reference to marine plants and the development of technology for access and research in the deep sea. Concerned about ocean deterioration she has observed during more than 6,000 hours of diving, coupled with awareness that most of the world’s oceans remain unexplored, she has become an active advocate of exploration, research and protection of living marine ecosystems.
