CONSERVATION IN ACTION : Benguela Current Conservation Work
Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem (BCLME) Programme
• An initiative by multiple sectors in Angola, Namibia, and South Africa to manage and protect the ecosystem's marine resources and its environment in an integrated and sustainable manner.
• Implemented by the United Nations Development Programme and executed by the United Nations Office of Programme Services with support from the Global Environment Facility.

Benguela Environment Fisheries Interaction and Training (BENEFIT) Programme
• A coordinated effort by fisheries institutes of Angola, Namibia, and South Africa to co-operate, share, and improve knowledge of the fisheries and oceanographic processes in the region in order to promote sustainable actions and improve training opportunities and capacity building in marine science.

The South African Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT), Marine and Coastal Management (MCM)
• The regulatory authority responsible for managing all marine and coastal activities.
• Included in their agenda is the protection and monitoring of coastal and estuarine resources, management of 19 marine protected areas, and research into fish stocks and their status.

World Wildlife Fund (WWF) South Africa
• WWF has named the Benguela Current LME as one of 200 Ecoregions that are a priority to protect because of their biological diversity and large representation of species.
• Working with the BENEFIT program to have the waters around Namibia's offshore islands declared a Marine Protected Area.
• Working to increase awareness of the impacts of longline fisheries on threatened seabirds, sharks and turtles on longline fisheries, by using known mitigation measures and increasing the involvement of the fishing industry.
